Temple Road, Jaffna (2025)

This piece was commissioned by GATE Duo (Simone Bellagamba, William Belpassi), premiered at Teatro Secci on Friday 11th April 2025.

GATE Duo commissioned Vinthya to compose a new work for the soprano saxophone, an instrument with very little solo repertoire.

This piece takes inspiration from the Tamil-Hindu instrument, the nadaswaram. Taking nuances in performance practice from its tradition such as glissandi, repeated notes, long expressive phrases and its percussive accompaniment translated onto the piano in the latter half of the piece, this composition tells the story of Vinthya’s research with B. Sakitjyan, whom she interviewed in his place of residence (Temple Road, Jaffna) with her parents in February 2024.
